2025년 5월 3일, 버크셔 해서웨이의 주주총회가 열렸다.
이 날, 세계 각지에서 많은 주주들이 오마하로 모였다. 버크셔의 주주총회는 타 기업과 다르게 단순한 연례 보고를 듣기 위해서가 아니다. 긴 시간 함께 회사를 지켜온 동료들이 한자리에 모여, 지난해의 사업적 성과를 돌아보고 또한, 주주들이 생각하는 어떤 것이든 함께하는 그런 자리다. 그래서 오마하의 이 하루는 숫자 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 버크셔와 함께 시간을 투자해 온 사람들, 그 관계의 깊이가 쌓여 만들어낸 하나의 문화이자 공동체다.
주주는 1인당 최대 네 장의 Credential(참여권)을 받을 수 있고, 친구, 부모, 아이들과 함께 온 이들이 행사장 곳곳에 눈에 띈다. 그 다양성과 개방성은 ‘기업 행사’보다는 ‘오래된 동료의 모임’ 같은 따뜻한 분위기를 만든다. 성공한 투자회사답게, 투자업계 종사자들도 이 자리를 찾는다. 그들에겐 이곳이 단지 주총이 아니라 업의 방향을 고민하고, ‘오마하의 현인’으로부터 인사이트를 얻으며, 같은 업계 사람들과 네트워킹을 다지는 시간이다.
오마하에서는 이 행사가 미식축구 경기 다음으로 전 세계 사람들이 가장 많이 모이는 연례행사라고 한다.
나는 올해 초, 워렌 버핏의 주주서한에서 Greg Abel이 곧 CEO가 될 것이라는 메시지를 보고, 이번이 워렌이 주최하는 마지막 주총이 될 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 비행기와 숙소를 서둘러 예약했다. 그리고 그 예감은 적중했다. 오늘 오전 세션이 끝나갈 무렵, 워렌은 2025년 연말을 기점으로 Greg Abel이 CEO 자리에 오른다는 은퇴 발표를 했다. 처음으로 구체적인 시점을 밝힌 것이었기에 현장에서도 놀라움과 함께 ‘이제는 때가 됐다’는 반응이 동시에 흘렀다. 워렌이 내년에도 주총에는 참석하겠다고 했지만, 워렌과 찰리가 함께하던 그 주총의 분위기가 어떻게 바뀔지는 쉽게 상상이 가지 않는다.
사실 나는 이번 주총 참석을 마지막까지 고민했었다. 잦은 출장으로 체력은 바닥났고, 몸은 계속 고장 신호를 보내고 있었다. 염증, 장염, 수면 부족이 겹쳐 상태가 좋지 않았다. 그럼에도 이 행사는 포기할 수 없었다. 베트남 출장을 마치고 한국에 들른 뒤, 곧바로 미국행 비행기를 탔다. 오마하에 도착해서는 이틀을 호텔에서 앓다가, 간신히 주총에 참석할 수 있었다.
주총에 직접 참석하며 느낀 몇 가지를 정리해 본다.
버크셔의 진정성, 그리고 주주를 대하는 태도
버크셔는 참석한 모든 사람을 진심으로 환대한다. 이런 개방적이고 주주 친화적인 기업 문화를 다른 기업에서 찾기는 어렵다. 특히 인상 깊었던 장면은 오전 세션에서 17세 여고생이 질문을 했을 때다. 경영진은 학생을 단지 어린 질문자로 대하지 않고, 하나의 ‘주주’로 존중하며 매우 진실되고 전문적인 답변을 전했다. 질문의 내용이나 나이, 주식 보유 수에 관계없이 모든 사람의 질문을 동등하게 다루는 모습은 이상적이라는 표현이 부족하지 않다. 특히 학생들, 어린 나이의 아이들을 보면서 그 나이에 이런 값진 경험을 한다는 것이 부럽기도 했다.
주식시장과 함께해 온 사람들
주총 기간 중 오마하에 오래 거주한 초기 주주들과 대화를 나누며, 자본시장에 오래 몸담은 사람들 특유의 성숙한 문화를 느낄 수 있었다. 버크셔의 클래스 A 주식은 1주당 10억 원이 넘는다. 행사장에 청바지를 입은 아저씨나 평범한 할머니가 실은 수백억 대 자산가인 경우도 많다. 내 앞에 앉은 할머니도 오래전부터 수백 주를 보유하고 있다고 했다. 그들은 발표 내용 하나하나에 집중하며, 주총이라는 행사를 삶의 일부로 즐기고 있었다. 단순히 자산 규모 때문이 아니라, 이 모임을 통해 투자관점에서 의미를 찾고 생각할 거리로 삼는 태도가 인상적이었다. 주주총회 동안 그들의 태도는 꽤 진지했다.
찰리 멍거의 빈자리
전반적으로 이번 주총은 무난했다. 하지만 찰리 멍거가 없는 주총이라 그런지 분위기는 이전보다 점잖아(?)졌다는 느낌이 들었다. 그의 직설적이고 유쾌한 발언, 때론 불편할 만큼 솔직했던 통찰이 그리웠다. 그가 없어진 자리가 생각보다 크게 느껴졌다.
동일한 정보, 다른 경험
많은 사람들이 주총에 직접 참석하면 뭔가 특별한 정보를 얻을 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 그러나 실제로는 유튜브 생중계를 통해 보나, 현장에 있거나, 정보의 차이는 없다. 워렌 버핏은 언제나 정보를 모든 주주에게 동등하게 제공해야 한다는 원칙을 강조해 왔다. CNBC를 통해 보는 것과 직접 듣는 정보는 동일하다.
그럼에도 불구하고 수많은 사람들이 장거리 비행을 감수하며 매년 이 자리를 찾는 이유는 분명하다. 바로 ‘현장에서만 느낄 수 있는 것들’ 때문이다. 발표를 직접 듣는 생생함, 주주들과의 네트워킹, 같은 마음으로 이 자리를 지켜온 사람들과의 교류. 그것이 이 모임이 계속해서 특별한 이유가 아닐까 싶다.
On May 3, 2025, Berkshire Hathaway held its annual shareholders’ meeting.
That day, shareholders from all over the world gathered in Omaha. Unlike at other companies, Berkshire’s annual meeting isn’t about sitting through a routine yearly report. It’s an occasion where people who have looked after the company together for years come together in one place, look back on the past year’s business results, and engage with whatever is on the shareholders’ minds. That is why this single day in Omaha carries a meaning beyond the numbers. It is a culture and a community built up from the depth of the relationships among people who have invested their time alongside Berkshire.
Each shareholder can receive up to four credentials (passes), and you notice people who have come with friends, parents, and children all over the venue. That diversity and openness creates a warm atmosphere that feels less like a ‘corporate event’ and more like a ‘gathering of old colleagues.’ Fitting for such a successful investment company, people working in the investment industry come here too. For them this is not merely an annual meeting but a time to reflect on where their profession is headed, to draw insight from the ‘Oracle of Omaha,’ and to build their network with others in the same field.
In Omaha, they say this is the annual event that draws the largest crowd of people from around the world, second only to a football game.
Earlier this year, when I read in Warren Buffett’s shareholder letter the message that Greg Abel would soon become CEO, it occurred to me that this might be the last annual meeting Warren himself would host. So I hurried to book my flights and lodging. And that hunch proved right. As this morning’s session was drawing to a close, Warren announced his retirement, saying that Greg Abel would take over as CEO at the end of 2025. Because it was the first time he had given a specific date, the room reacted with both surprise and a sense that ‘the time has finally come.’ Warren said he would still attend the annual meeting next year, but it’s hard to picture how the atmosphere of those meetings—the ones Warren and Charlie shared—will change.
Truth be told, I was uncertain about attending this meeting right up to the end. Frequent business trips had drained me, and my body kept sending out warning signs. Inflammation, an intestinal infection, and lack of sleep all piled up, and I was in poor shape. Even so, I couldn’t give this event up. After finishing a business trip to Vietnam, I stopped in Korea and then immediately boarded a flight to the United States. After arriving in Omaha, I spent two days laid up sick in the hotel before I could barely manage to attend the meeting.
Let me put down a few things I felt while attending the meeting in person.
Berkshire’s sincerity, and how it treats its shareholders
Berkshire genuinely welcomes everyone who attends. It’s hard to find this kind of open, shareholder-friendly corporate culture at other companies. One moment that left a particularly strong impression was when a 17-year-old high school girl asked a question during the morning session. Management didn’t treat her as just a young questioner; they respected her as a ‘shareholder’ and gave a very sincere and professional answer. The way they handled everyone’s questions equally, regardless of the substance of the question, the person’s age, or how many shares they held, is nothing short of ideal. Watching the students and young children in particular, I even felt a touch of envy that they were having such a valuable experience at that age.
The people who have grown up with the stock market
During the meeting, talking with early shareholders who have long lived in Omaha, I could sense the mature culture characteristic of people who have spent a long time in the capital markets. Berkshire’s Class A shares are worth more than a billion won each. Many of the people at the venue—an ordinary-looking man in jeans, a plain-looking grandmother—are in fact worth tens of billions of won. The grandmother sitting in front of me said she had held several hundred shares for a long time. They focused on every detail of the presentations, enjoying the annual meeting as a part of their lives. What impressed me was not their level of wealth, but their attitude of finding meaning in this gathering from an investment perspective and treating it as food for thought. Their demeanor throughout the meeting was quite earnest.
The void left by Charlie Munger
Overall, this year’s meeting went smoothly. But perhaps because it was a meeting without Charlie Munger, the atmosphere felt more subdued (?) than before. I missed his blunt, witty remarks and his insights that were sometimes honest to the point of being uncomfortable. The absence he left behind felt larger than I had expected.
The same information, a different experience
Many people expect that attending the meeting in person will let them obtain some kind of special information. In reality, though, whether you watch the YouTube livestream or are there in person, there is no difference in the information. Warren Buffett has always emphasized the principle that information must be provided equally to all shareholders. What you hear watching on CNBC is identical to what you hear in person.
Even so, the reason countless people endure long-haul flights to come here every year is clear. It is precisely ‘the things you can only feel on the ground.’ The vividness of hearing the presentations firsthand, networking with fellow shareholders, exchanging thoughts with people who have kept coming to this place with the same heart. That, I think, may be why this gathering remains special year after year.
