투자라는 단어를 정의하기에는 내 생각과 경험은 아직 부족하다. 어쩌면 평생을 투자하며 살아온 사람들도 이 단어를 한마디로 규정하기 어려울지 모른다. 누군가는 투자를 돈을 불리는 기술이라 말하고, 누군가는 위험을 감수하는 도전이라 정의한다. 또 어떤 이들은 투자란 결국 기다림의 미학이라고 이야기하기도 한다.
현재, 나에게 있어 투자는 세상을 바라보는 방법 정도로 설명하는 것이 내가 할 수 있는 최대한의 정의다.
투자를 하면서 기업의 재무제표를 들여다보는 것은 단순히 사업의 수익성을 따지는 작업이 아니었다. 그것은 한 기업이 속한 산업의 생태계를 이해하는 과정이며, 나아가 그 산업과 경쟁사의 움직임을 분석하는 일이기도 하다. 어떤 기업이 시장에서 어떻게 성장하는지를 분석하는 것은 결국 경제와 사회의 변화를 읽는 일이었고, 주식시장의 변동성 속에서 흔들리지 않는 법을 익히는 것은 내 마음을 다스리는 일에 가깝다고 생각한다.
나는 초등학교 시절, 워런 버핏의 인터뷰 영상을 본 적이 있었다. 그는 자신에게 가장 큰 영향을 준 책으로 “현명한 투자자”를 여러 번 언급했다. 그 말을 듣고 궁금증이 생겼다. 당시에 어떤 책이길래 그렇게 중요한 것일까? 호기심에 서점으로 가서 책을 구매했지만, 초등학생이었던 나는 몇 장 넘기다 금세 읽기를 포기하고 말았다. 그 뒤로 오기가 생겨 중·고등학교 때도 다시 읽으려 했지만, 역시나 실패했다. 그리고 대학생이 되어서야 비로소 그 내용이 조금씩 이해되기 시작했다.
투자를 하기 전에 우리는 각자의 철학이 필요하다. 투자 철학은 사람마다 다를 수 있다. 나에게 기초가 되었던 철학은 워런 버핏의 가치 투자였다. 그의 스타일에 부합하는 가치 투자가 가진 논리와 궁극적으로 가리키는 삶의 방향성은 내 성향과도 잘 맞았다. 그리고 무엇보다, 내가 워런 버핏, 찰리 멍거, 피터 린치 같은 가치 투자자들을 좋아했던 이유는 그들의 삶의 방식이었다. 그들에게 투자란 단순히 돈을 벌기 위한 수단이 아니라, 그 자체로 하나의 게임이었다. 그리고 그 게임에서 승리하더라도 그들의 삶의 방식은 변하지 않았다. 똑같은 것을 먹고, 같은 방식으로 내일을 살아간다.
이렇게 세계 대부호 순위에 드는 사람이 오래된 캐딜락을 타고 출퇴근하며 맥도널드를 먹는다는 것이 멋지다고 생각했다. 부의 크기에 따라 삶의 방식이 바뀌지 않는다는 점이 인상적이었다. 워런 버핏은 한 인터뷰에서 빌 게이츠와 함께 ‘성공’에 대해 이야기한 적이 있다.
“만약 과거로 돌아가 한 푼도 없는 상태가 된다면 어떻게 하겠나?”
그 질문에 그는 이렇게 답했다.
“내 돈이 전부 없어지는 것은 전혀 문제가 되지 않는다. 하지만 남의 돈을 잃게 한다면, 나는 다시 일어설 수 있을지 모르겠다.”
나는 아직도 투자를 완전히 이해하지 못했고, 앞서가는 투자자들의 책을 읽으며 “따라하기”를 배워가는 과정에 있다. 하지만 한 가지는 확실하다. 투자는 단순한 돈벌이가 아니라, 세상을 해석하는 또 하나의 언어다. 그리고 그 언어를 배우는 과정에서 나는 시장뿐만 아니라, 스스로를 더 깊이 이해하게 된다. 그게 나에게 있어 투자가 가지는 큰 매력이자 재미이다.

My thoughts and experience are still too thin to define a word like investing. Perhaps even people who have invested their whole lives would find it hard to pin the word down in a single phrase. Some call investing the art of growing money; others define it as a venture that means taking on risk. Still others say that investing is, in the end, the aesthetic of waiting.
For now, the most I can manage is to describe investing as a way of looking at the world.
Poring over a company’s financial statements while investing was never simply a matter of judging the profitability of a business. It is a process of understanding the ecosystem of the industry the company belongs to, and beyond that, of analyzing the moves of that industry and its competitors. Analyzing how a company grows in the market turned out to be a way of reading the changes in the economy and society, and learning how to stay unshaken amid the volatility of the stock market is, I think, closer to learning how to govern my own mind.
Back in elementary school, I once watched an interview with Warren Buffett. He mentioned, more than once, that the book that influenced him most was “The Intelligent Investor.” Hearing that made me curious. What kind of book could be so important? Out of curiosity I went to a bookstore and bought it, but as an elementary school student I turned only a few pages before quickly giving up. After that, out of stubbornness, I tried to read it again in middle and high school, and failed once more. It was only when I became a university student that the content finally began to make sense to me, little by little.
Before we invest, each of us needs a philosophy. An investment philosophy can differ from person to person. The philosophy that became my foundation was Warren Buffett’s value investing. The logic of the value investing that fits his style, and the direction in life it ultimately points toward, suited my temperament well. And above all, the reason I admired value investors like Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, and Peter Lynch was their way of living. To them, investing was not merely a means of making money but a game in itself. And even after winning that game, their way of life did not change. They eat the same things and go about tomorrow the same way.
I thought it was admirable that someone ranked among the world’s wealthiest would commute in an old Cadillac and eat McDonald’s. What struck me was that their way of life did not change with the size of their wealth. In one interview, Warren Buffett spoke with Bill Gates about “success.”
“If you went back in time and found yourself without a penny, what would you do?”
To that question, he answered:
“Losing all of my own money would not be a problem at all. But if I caused others to lose their money, I’m not sure I could get back on my feet.”
I still do not fully understand investing, and I am in the middle of learning to “imitate” by reading the books of investors who have gone ahead of me. But one thing is certain. Investing is not simply a way to make money but another language for interpreting the world. And in the process of learning that language, I come to understand not only the market but myself more deeply. That, for me, is the great appeal and pleasure of investing.
Now I want to introduce a few of the books I read while studying investing. Just as these books planted an investment philosophy in me, I hope they can serve as a small compass on someone’s investing journey. I’ve given a rough sense of each book’s contents, and used stars to mark the difficulty as I subjectively felt it. For readers who can understand English to some degree, I recommend reading them in English, keeping the original intent in mind.
Some of the books on this list may not seem directly related to investing, but they deal with a philosophy of life. I believe it is meaningful, before establishing an investment philosophy, to first reflect on how you live and on what matters most in life. Investing is not merely a game of numbers; in the end it changes depending on the values through which you view the world.
